Meet the coaches

World-class expertise, two perspectives

John brings decades of on-water coaching experience. Bode brings the lab. Together they offer a complete picture of your rowing — from what the eye sees to what the data reveals.

Head Coach — Video Analysis

John has spent his career in Boston, coaching rowers of all ages and abilities. His video analysis sessions are built on years of watching thousands of strokes — knowing instinctively where power is being lost, where injury risk is building, and exactly what drills will fix it.

Brent Bode
Graduate Researcher — Biomechanics & Force Analysis

Bode is completing his graduate degree at the Biomechanics Lab at UNH, where his research focuses on the force curves rowers generate through the stroke — measured via a footplate sensor that captures pressure over time and reveals left-right asymmetry. After witnessing too many overuse injuries in young athletes, he went back to school to understand the mechanics behind them.

The science behind Bode's analysis

What your force curve tells us

Most coaching works from what the eye can see. Bode's footplate sensor reveals what the eye cannot — exactly how force is applied through the drive, and whether your port and starboard legs are working in balance.

Illustrative force curve — left vs right footplate

Left footplate
Right footplate
1
Peak force timing
Where in the drive does each leg hit maximum pressure? Early, late, or perfectly timed? This reveals sequencing and how efficiently you transfer leg drive into the boat.
2
Left-right asymmetry
Even small differences between legs compound over thousands of strokes. Asymmetry is one of the leading causes of overuse injuries in rowers — and it's invisible without sensor data.
3
Force curve shape
A smooth, bell-shaped curve means efficient power application. Spikes, flat spots, or early drop-off each point to specific technical issues — and specific drills to fix them.

What rowers say

★★★★★

John's frame-by-frame breakdown was unlike anything I'd had before. I dropped 4 seconds off my 2k within 6 weeks of working on the drill plan.

Bode's force curve data showed a significant asymmetry I had no idea about. Once we addressed it my back pain — which I'd had for two seasons — just disappeared.

★★★★★

Having both coaches look at my rowing was a revelation. John spotted the visual issues, Bode confirmed them in the numbers. I finally understood what was actually happening.
